Women In Wine: Why We Should Be Shouting Louder

08 March 2025

Let's talk about something important:

Women in Wine

Because while winemaking might conjure up images of old-school vineyard dudes in dusty cellars, there’s a new generation of female winemakers absolutely bossing it right now. And yet—deep breath—only 14% of the world’s wineries have a woman as the lead winemaker. That’s a shockingly low number considering the sheer talent out there.

So we’re putting the spotlight where it belongs—on four incredible female winemakers shaking up the industry and making wines that you need to get in your glass.

Why Women Winemakers Deserve More Recognition

  • Women make up half the world’s wine consumers, but the industry still has a serious imbalance in leadership.

  • A study by Santa Clara University found that wines made by female winemakers consistently scored higher in blind tastings than those made by men.

  • The world’s most famous wine regions have a tiny proportion of female winemakers: in Burgundy, it’s less than 10%, and in Napa Valley, it’s only 12%.

  • Despite these numbers, women are producing some of the most exciting, forward-thinking, and just downright delicious wines out there.

  • Four Wines Made by Women

That you need to drink now...

    1. 2024 Jules Taylor Marlborough

    Sauvignon Blanc

Jules Taylor has been part of our range since we first opened in 2010—and for good reason.

After learning the ropes at larger Marlborough wineries, she struck out on her own, armed with deep knowledge of the region and the best growers.

The result? A vivacious, zesty Kiwi Sauvignon packed with nettles, kiwi fruit, thyme, basil, and passionfruit. Classic, but with an edge.

    2. 2024 Val de Meigas

    Albariño

Rebeca Barral’s Albariño is pure Galicia in a bottle. Sourced from her family’s pergola-trained vines in the Val do Salnés, this wine is all about freshness, minerality, and vibrancy.

Plus, the name references the mythical witches (Meigas) of the region, which only adds to its magic.

    3. 2023 Famille de Boel France Saint Joseph Rouge

    Rue des Poulies

Nelly France co-runs this micro-estate in the northern Rhône alongside her husband Arnaud, championing biodynamic growing and non-interventionist winemaking.

This 100% Syrah is all about deep, dark fruit, spice, and structure—perfect for food pairing. Fun fact: it’s named after the street where the first restaurant in Paris opened.

    4. 2022 Chiara Condello Predappio

    Sangiovese

Chiara Condello works magic with her five hectares of organically farmed vines in Emilia-Romagna. Her Predappio Sangiovese is pure, energetic, and bursting with concentration.

It might be the ‘entry point’ to her range, but don’t let that fool you—this is seriously impressive winemaking.

    Time to Raise a Glass

The wine world is changing, but there’s still a long way to go when it comes to giving women the recognition they deserve. So, consider this your mission: next time you’re picking a bottle, seek out something made by a female winemaker.

Because trust us—some of the best wines in the world are being made by women, and it’s time we made more noise about it.

    Cheers to that. 🍷
